Dental Sealants for Kids

Keeping Your Child’s Teeth Healthy and Cavity Free!

Tooth decay and cavities are a common problem for kids around the globe. If untreated, they can lead to infection and painful treatments. One of the most effective ways to prevent this from happening in children is by using a dental sealant. This thin, plastic film is painted over the chewing surface of the teeth and is pain-free to apply. At Sheridan Cyrus Dentistry, we offer personalized paediatric dental services to help your kids maintain healthy teeth and good oral health. Having treated children of all ages, including infants, we know how to make them feel comfortable and relaxed with dental exams and other procedures. Our aim is to cultivate good oral hygiene habits in our young patients that they can continue to practice for life. Sealants are an excellent protection against cavities. In addition to brushing, flossing, and fluoride, they can protect children’s teeth from the need for future restorations.

Are Dental Sealants Safe?

Sealants are safe and cost-effective dental care procedures. They are used in patients of all ages that are prone to cavities. While widely recommended, dental sealants are underused throughout the country. As a parent, you should consider a sealant as a preventative treatment for your child’s oral health. The procedure is done by a paediatric dentist and involves:

  • Cleaning the teeth that are going to be sealed
  • Drying the teeth
  • Applying an acid solution to the chewing surfaces of the teeth to roughen them up so that the sealant bonds well
  • Rinsing and drying the teeth again
  • Painting the sealant onto the tooth’s enamel where it will bond and harden.

How Long Do Sealants Last?

Sealants can protect your child’s teeth for up to 10 years from early decay. You will still need to schedule regular checkups with your paediatric dentist and must also perform routine care at home as well as your annual cleanings.  If your child’s sealant shows signs of wear, the dentist can correct it before it requires complete reapplication.

Benefits of Dental Sealants

  • With good oral health, a sealant is 100 percent effective at combating cavities and decay.
  • It is a minimally invasive, safe and highly-effective procedure.
  • It costs less than paying for a cavity filling.

Insurance May Cover Your Child’s Sealants

Your insurance carrier may cover your child’s sealant appointment. Check with your insurance provider to see if you are covered and what deductibles or co-pays may apply. Even if you paid for it in full, it still costs less than the average cost to fill a cavity later on. To prevent cavities and decay, bring your child to our paediatric dentist at an early age. Regular dental exams and care help prevent small issues from growing into painful problems. Our culturally diverse patient families feel totally comfortable with our team that speaks many languages including English, French, Spanish, Farsi, Tagalog, Amharic, Somali, Cantonese, Mandarin, Tamil and Hindi. You can count on us for high-quality, personalized care that keeps you and your kids smiling.
