Considering Cosmetic Dentistry? You Could be a Candidate for Porcelain Veneers!

If you find yourself looking in the mirror and feeling dissatisfied with your smile, you should know that you are not without options. Thousands of people have corrected minor imperfections and even major issues with their teeth via cosmetic dentistry. One popular procedure is that of porcelain veneers.

What are Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin, custom-made shells that have the same colour as a natural tooth and are designed to cover the front surface of your existing teeth. They improve the appearance and brightness of your existing smile and are bonded to your teeth.

Can Porcelain Veneers Help My Smile?

Veneers are used to fix cosmetic issues with teeth. Some issues that can be repaired using veneers include:

  • Discoloured teeth
  • Teeth that have been worn down
  • Broken or chipped teeth
  • Misaligned, irregularly shaped or uneven teeth
  • Gaps
  • Craters or bulges in the teeth

Veneers are an ideal choice for dramatic changes to your smile. Most patients opt for them because:

  • They offer a natural tooth-like appearance
  • They do not irritate gum tissue
  • They change the colour and shape of your teeth
  • They are stain-resistant

The Process of Veneers

Dental veneers are not a one-stop process. Instead, they include multiple steps that will be performed at your dental clinic in Scarborough. These steps include:

  1. A woman with a bright smileDetermining CandidacyNot all teeth are candidates. Your dentist will need to assess your teeth, determine what results you are trying to achieve and then decide if veneers are the right cosmetic procedure. They will need to take x-rays and possibly dental impressions. Your impressions are sent to an outside lab to create the veneers, which may take anywhere from one to two weeks.
  2. Preparing the Teeth At one appointment, your teeth will be prepared to accept the veneer. This is done by removing a ½ millimetre of your tooth’s enamel from the front surface. This is about the equivalent thickness of the veneer, so your teeth are not bulging once they are bonded in place.
  3. Temporary Bonding Before permanently bonding, your dentist will temporarily place the veneer on your tooth to assess colour and positioning. Adjustments may have to be made.
  4. Cleaning and Polishing Your existing tooth will be polished and etched to help the bonding cement adhere to the surface.
  5. Bonding The dental cement is placed on the back side of the veneer and then the veneer is placed on the front of your tooth. Once in position, your dentist will use a special light to activate the bonding chemicals inside the dental cement. This helps the cement cure faster.

What Can Porcelain Veneers Fix?

Veneers are used to correct cosmetic issues with your teeth, including:
•    Worn down teeth
•    Chipped, broken or uneven teeth
•    Discolored teeth
•    Misaligned, irregularly shaped or uneven teeth
•    Teeth with gaps in between them

Are Porcelain Veneers Right for You?

Points to Consider:
As with any cosmetic dentistry procedure, there are benefits and limitations to porcelain veneers.
Advantages
•    They look just like real teeth.
•    They are not likely to irritate your gums.
•    They are stain-resistant.
•    Veneers are an aesthetically appealing, stronger option than crowns.
•    They are typically pain-free.
•    They do not require any special care other than the usual brushing, flossing and professional cleanings that your teeth need.

Limitations
•    The procedure cannot be reversed once it is completed – only adjustments can be made.
•    Veneers are expensive and because they are cosmetic dentistry procedures, insurance may not cover the cost.
•    Teeth may be sensitive afterward because enamel was removed in order to make room for the veneers. So, you may experience some discomfort while drinking hot or cold beverages.
•    Your teeth under the veneers are still prone to decay; therefore, you must take precaution and care for them well.
•    If you grind your teeth, you may not qualify for veneers.
•    Veneers last five to 10 years; therefore, you will have to replace them when they are worn.

What to Expect with Porcelain Veneers

You will need to book a consultation where your dentist will determine if you are a candidate for porcelain veneers. X-rays may be taken to determine the shape of the teeth as well as to ensure there are no underlying issues, such as cavities.
Your dentist will then call you in for a prep appointment. A small amount of enamel will be removed from the existing tooth which is about the same thickness as the veneer. During this appointment, an impression is made of your teeth so your dentist can order the proper veneers. Temporary veneers may be put on while you wait for the permanent ones to arrive.

At the last appointment, your dentist will permanently bond the veneers to your teeth. Excess bonding compound is removed, your teeth cleaned and final adjustments are done to make sure you are comfortable. You may be required to come in a few weeks later for a follow-up.

Overall, the procedure is fairly pain-free. In just one to two weeks after your initial appointment, you could enjoy a perfect smile to confidently show off!

What are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin pieces of porcelain that are used to create natural-looking teeth. They are just as strong and resilient as your natural tooth enamel, and no one can tell they are not real teeth. The wafer-thin porcelain shell is bonded to the front of your teeth, instantly transforming their color, size, shape and length. You can enjoy a perfect smile again!

Porcelain veneers are most commonly used to fix:
•    Discoloration
•    Worn down teeth
•    Chipped or broken teeth
•    Misaligned, irregularly shaped or uneven teeth
•    Gaps in between teeth

What is the Procedure for Porcelain Veneers?

Before you decide to get veneers, you will need to schedule a consultation with your dental clinic in Toronto. During the consultation, your teeth will be analyzed and measured to see what type of veneers are best. X-rays may be taken and impressions made of your mouth and teeth so that the veneers can be ordered. Next, your teeth will be prepared for the veneers. About a ½ millimetre of enamel will be removed so that the veneer can be placed on your teeth without making them feel bulky. Your veneers are made in a dental laboratory (which takes one to two weeks), but temporary veneers can be placed until they arrive.

At your final appointment, your veneers will be fitted to make sure they are the right shape and size. Then, they will be permanently bonded. A follow-up appointment may be necessary to check on how the veneers are functioning, how your gums are responding and to make any adjustments that may be necessary.
Porcelain veneers are a great way to restore your smile. Whether you have damaged teeth from an accident or stains that traditional teeth whitening cannot remove, veneers will bring back and enhance your smile.
